Together on sustainable development - academic seminar

On Wednesday 18 December 2024, the ECOTECH-COMPLEX building of the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research at UMCS hosted an academic seminar organised by the CeReClimEn Centre at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (UMCS) and LW Bogdanka.

Its participants talked about the challenges and opportunities for the sustainable development of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. in the context of environmental and socio-economic conditions. The event was opened by Prof. Grzegorz Grzywaczewski, head of the CeReClimEn Centre at UMCS and chairman of the Environmental Science Council at LW Bogdanka. In his opening speech, he stated that:

The seminar is an opportunity to reflect on one of the most important contemporary challenges, namely sustainable development, especially in the context of the coal sector in Poland.

Another opening speech was given by Sławomir Krenczyk, Deputy Head for Development, who talked about the key directions of the Company's activities in the context of sustainable development.

The meeting was attended by prominent experts, including the Chief National Geologist, Prof. Krzysztof Galos, as well as representatives of universities, scientific institutes, national and landscape parks, environmental protection bureaus and organisations, as well as local government and economic experts.

LW Bogdanka's sustainability activities are an example of best practices: I believe that in the context of Poland, Bogdanka's approach to this issue is getting close to becoming a role model, thanks to the measures taken by the company - at least in my eyes. One example is the company's Environmental Science Council, which helps to identify areas of concern when it comes to the environment and its protection. I think that if these solutions were put in place at many other mining companies, the climate for mining operations itself would perhaps be a little better

- Prof. Galos stated.

For years, the company has been taking measures that bring together industrial development with concern for the environment and local communities. Organising this seminar with UMCS is an expression of our openness to working with academia and our desire to contribute to the debate on the energy transition in Poland. The challenges of climate change and social transition require a comprehensive approach and knowledge exchange, which is why I am glad that this event will be a platform for dialogue between experts, scientists and practitioners

- stated Zbigniew Stopa, President of the Management Board of LW Bogdanka.

The event was an opportunity to resolve the Bogdanka Blisko Natury (Bogdanka Closer to Nature) contest, a joint venture with Kurier Lubelski. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the participants!
