LW Bogdanka and Elektrorecykling S.A. signed a letter of intent on cooperation in the area of circular economy

During this year's edition of the School of Underground Mining in Kraków, Lubelski Węgiel ‘Bogdanka’ S.A. and Elektrorecykling S.A. signed a letter of intent on cooperation in projects related to the circular economy and raw material recovery.

On Bogdanka's side, this document was signed by Sławomir Krenczyk, Deputy President of the Management Board for Development, and on Elektrorecykling S.A.'s side – by Bartosz Kubicki, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and founder of the company.

The agreement sets out a framework for potential cooperation, particularly in the areas of industrial and post-mining waste utilisation, recovery of strategic and critical raw materials, and development of new material processing technologies.

Diversification of activities in response to the energy transition

As Sławomir Krenczyk highlighted, signing the Letter of Intent is part of LW Bogdanka's long-term strategy to diversify its operations.

The energy transition is an inevitable process that is profoundly changing the market environment in the mining sector. As a responsible company, we must diversify our business activities today, seeking alternative business models to the current one. Our goal is not only to develop new revenue streams, but above all to secure jobs in the future and use the skills of our employees in new industrial areas

- said Sławomir Krenczyk, Deputy President of the Management Board for Development at LW Bogdanka.

As he pointed out, the potential of mining waste and the company's technical infrastructure may be used in projects related to the circular economy, including in the area of rare earth element recovery, production of metakaolin, building materials, mineral fertilisers and alternative fuels.

New prospects for the recycling sector

Bartosz Kubicki highlighted that cooperation with the mining sector opens up new development opportunities for the recycling industry.

A circular economy requires courage in seeking new perspectives and synergies between sectors that have previously operated independently. We can see enormous potential in combining the experience of the mining and recycling sectors. Importantly, Elektrorecykling is already active in the area of urban mining – we are recovering metals and strategic raw materials from waste electrical and electronic equipment, treating waste as a secondary source of raw materials. Cooperation with the mining sector is a natural step for us towards building a modern model of the raw materials industry in Poland. We are ready to share our know-how, technological and organisational experience in the field of secondary raw material processing and the construction of modern recovery facilities,

- said Bartosz Kubicki, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and founder of Elektrorecykling S.A.

He also emphasised that the cooperation could contribute to building national competence in the recovery of strategic and critical raw materials and to the development of alternative fuels for industrial applications, including potential co-firing with coal.

Scope of planned cooperation

The Parties declare that they will analyse and prepare joint projects covering areas such as:

  • utilisation of post-industrial and post-mining waste,
  • recovery of strategic and critical raw materials,
  • development of material processing technologies,
  • production of materials for construction and agriculture,
  • production of alternative fuels and analysis of their industrial applications.

An important element of the cooperation will also be the use of mine and processing plant employees' qualifications in new technological processes.
