5 years of the “Wandering of Lublin cranes” project: key findings and new directions for conservation of the species

The Foundation For Nature and the Polesie National Park, with the patronage of LW Bogdanka and the Marshal Office of the Lubelskie Voivodship, summarise the five-year stage of the “Wandering of Lublin's Cranes” project.

Due to the use of modern technology, unique data on migrations and threats to the species has been collected, confirming, among others, the key role of water for habitat stability.

In the project, a drone with a thermal imaging camera was used allowing to locate 13 new nests and count 500 cranes on the roost in Polesie National Park this year. The online field camera attracted the attention of viewers from more than 50 countries and the photo traps provided detailed data on predation.

The project shows how modern technology and reliable knowledge can support the protection of local ecosystems. We are glad that Bogdanka participates in activities that generate real benefits to nature and strengthen awareness of the importance of biodiversity in our region.

- says Bartosz Rożnawski, Vice-President of the Management Board of LW Bogdanka for production.

To date, 15 birds have been equipped with GPS transmitters, eight of which are currently monitored. The data confirms that the most important migration stop is the Hungarian Hortobágy National Park, and that one of the cranes called “Roskoszna” spends winter in Algeria for the third time. Identified threats include, among others, wetland drying, predator pressure, agricultural activity intensification and infrastructural barriers. The Foundation announces further activities aimed at the active protection of habitats and the development of international cooperation.
