First meeting of the Lublin region transformation team
Bogdanka will work - there are no plans to liquidate the mine. Transforming the region is the joint task for the local community, the government and Enea Group companies – this is the main and clear message emerging from the first meeting of the Lublin region transformation team.
The meeting, which took place in Łęczna on 27th March 2025, was attended by the Minister of Industry Marzena Czarnecka, the Deputy Minister of State Assets Robert Kropiwnicki, members of parliament and local government officials representing the Łęczna County and the entire Lublin region. All representatives of the social party of LW Bogdanka and the management boards of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka and the Enea Group were present, too. The discussions focused on the directions for the fair transformation of the region associated with mining.
The first of a series of meetings, initiated by the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of State Assets, was held locally in Łęczna. All parties of the meeting presented their perspectives, both in respect of local government, social and economic issues, indicating the most important challenges and needs of the region and the role of Bogdanka as the largest employer and enterprise in the Lublin region. The need for co-operation and the importance of a responsible and planned approach to the upcoming changes were emphasised. The participants of the meeting declared their willingness to keep on working together.
The Minister of Industry Marzena Czarnecka clearly asserted once again:
There are no plans to shut down Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. The future of the company as a modern entity active in areas of raw material and energy transformation is part of the government's strategy for the region.
The statement of the Deputy Minister of State Assets Robert Kropiwnicki was equally unequivocal:
There are no assumptions, no plans that would involve the decommissioning of the mine. Of course, the mine's operations are affected by EU regulations and market conditions, but this does not mean that Bogdanka has no prospects.
Categorical words were also said by the owner of Bogdanka. Enea's CEO, Grzegorz Kinelski, stressed:
Bogdanka S.A. remains a key link in the structure of the Enea Group. Transformation is inevitable – the change is already taking place, independently of the decisions of management boards or ministries. At the same time, Bogdanka will change towards a responsible transformation and still has opportunities ahead of it to develop its core business and conquer new markets, while ensuring that it is and will continue to be the most important supplier for power plants from the Enea Group.
The Management Board of LW Bogdanka presented an outline of the diversification projects that will be included in the company's new strategy. This document is to be unveiled in the near future and its publication will be accompanied by a series of meetings providing details of various projects.
The participants of the meeting had a common goal: to identify key issues and challenges relevant to the region in order to jointly develop concrete courses of action. Despite their differing views, they were united by the will to define a common vision for the transformation of the Łęczna County and the entire Lublin region. It was emphasised that the effectiveness of the transformation would only be possible when it gained social acceptance. The key importance of securing funds for infrastructure investments and the development of new labour market opportunities in the region were also pointed out.
It was agreed that in the coming weeks the local authorities would present their proposals concerning investments aimed at supporting the transformation process. Another meeting in a similar format is planned for the autumn.
