Lubelski Węgiel „Bogdanka” plans to increase output capacities as a result of investments in the scope of coal planers

Friday, 2008-11-14
The exploitation of so called thin coal beds will be commenced by Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka. It is a new mining technique which have been never applied in Poland but as a result of its implementation the output capacities may be increased even by about 10.000 tons daily. The Company announced its invitation for Tenders for the suppliers of specialized equipment i.e. coal planers for the coal beds with the height not exceeding 1.7m. It will be the most technologically advanced equipment in Poland. The commencement of the exploitation of thin coal beds is expected early 2010.

The longwall mining systems are generally used in mining industry as the common mining technique. But the coal winning obtained by means of this method is characterized by significant content of so called Carboniferous rocks and stone. Therefore further processing phases are required. The exploitation of so called thin coal beds is possible by means of special longwall mining systems or coal planners and makes it possible to obtain almost pure coal winning in whole. Aforesaid technique is used in Germany, United States, Czech Republic and in South Africa..

Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. as the first mine in Poland will commence the implementation of this modern mining technology designed for thin coal beds with the height not exceeding 1.7m. As a result of intended coal planers sets, it will be possible to increase our daily output by about 10.000 tons. The operation of this new  equipment will be commenced in mining field in Nadrybie and Stefanów early 2010.

„The development and continuous performance improvement in the scope of the coal beds exploitation are the priorities in the scope of our development strategy. We estimate that as a result of this investment the industrial resources of the mine will be increased by about 100 million tons. In a longer term perspective we will be able to extend the exploitation period of our resources even by 10 years. In a short term scale, it will be possible to reduce the costs, to improve the output structure and to increase our output capacities.” – explained the President of Management in LW Bogdanka – Mr. Mirosław Taras.

In the opinion of specialists, so called thin coal beds constitute about 30 up to 35% of all resources of so called “black gold” in Poland. Up to the present time they have been not used owing to technical and financial reasons. The experts estimate that the coal resources in the form of thin coal beds in Poland may reach even one milliard tons.

„Having completed the review and analysis of all available technical and equipment opportunities in Bogdanka we have decided to apply the coal planers in the exploitation of thin coal beds. It will be the most advanced solution in Polish hard coal mining industry. Wholly automated coal planers with capacity of typical longwall mining systems to be proposed by Tenderers will practically eliminate the operating personnel from the longwall, because their remote control and direct monitoring of work progress can be performed from the ground" – said Mr. Zbigniew Stopa – The Deputy to the President of Management in LW Bogdanka S.A.
